Dawn mist in the Val d’Orcia below the villa’s hill, with Monte Amiata on the horizon

Val d’Orcia · Toscana

A house abovethe mist.

A seventeenth-century casale for up to twelve guests, alone on its hill outside Pienza. Let whole, by the week or the season.

01The house

Built in 1680 for wheat and wine. Restored for slow mornings.

Velatura stands alone at the end of a cypress drive four hundred metres long. The farmhouse, its dovecote tower and the old granary hold six suites, a vaulted spa and a kitchen built around a wood oven. Around them lie forty hectares of olives, vines and wheat, and a view that runs south to Monte Amiata.

The name is a painter’s word: a velatura is the thin glaze the Sienese masters laid over their hills. The valley wears the same veil every morning.

03A day at Velatura

From the first mist to the last star.

  1. Coffee on the loggia while the Orcia valley is still under its veil.

  2. Pecorino, figs, warm schiacciata and eggs from the farm next door.

  3. The pool faces Monte Amiata. Salt water, heated from April to October.

  4. Roll the local pasta with Graziella at the long kitchen table.

  5. Vin Santo or a Negroni on the terrace, while the hills turn copper.

  6. Four courses under the pergola, or pizza from the wood oven.

  7. Six kilometres from the nearest town, the sky goes properly dark. Look up.

Guest book

We came for a week and left with a different sense of time. Coffee on the loggia, watching the mist burn off the valley, is something we will carry for years.

Hannah and Tom R., LondonStayed in September 2026

Twelve of us, three generations, and a house that seemed to have been waiting for exactly us. Chiara thought of everything before we did.

Graziella’s pici were the best thing we ate in Italy, and we ate a great deal of Italy.
